Presentation
Benin is a country in West Africa, stretching 700 kilometres from the Niger River in the north to the Atlantic coast in the south. The country is part of ECOWAS and the Francophonie, and has Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, and Niger and Burkina Faso to the north.
However, the country benefited somewhat from the political and economic crisis in Côte d'Ivoire during the first decade of 2000. Indeed, the port of Cotonou has greatly increased its activity at the expense of that of Abidjan, which has contributed to the creation of many jobs in the region. However, apart from this port, economic activity remains dependent on cotton exports, which account for 75% of the country's income. This monoculture hinders the development of the country, which struggles to compete with the United States and Europe, which are heavily subsidized in this area.
Diversification of the economy is a necessary step to launch Benin on the path to more sustainable development.
